Towering mountains, glacier-carved valleys, sweeping coastline, high alpine lakes, roaring waterfalls, abundant wildlife and many adventure opportunities make the western provinces of Canada an ideal trip for travelers looking to experience one of the last great wildernesses.

This region of Canada, which encompasses Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, can be summed up in three words – big, bold and beautiful.

Our journey overland with G Adventures took us through two of the provinces, starting in Calgary, Alberta across to the British Columbia coast. A distance of over 1600km, retraced the footsteps of the early explorers through parts of Canada that are still wild and undeveloped, as they were hundreds of years ago.

The wind is howling outside, the rain is pelting against the window and it’s so cold you’ve resorted to wearing a beanie and thermals even inside the house.

Turkeys, Soup, Bike Trails and Beer

It’s not often you see turkeys wondering along a main street. Usually, they’re basted and breast up in a roasting tin. Yet, here in Forrest they wander around as if they’re part of the community. Maybe the weekend surge of visitors has brought out their social side.

We’re headed towards the Public Hall in the township, where the annual Otway Soup Festival is being held. There aren’t many soup festivals in the world, but here they seem to take their soup making skills quite seriously. Well, they must – the festival is in its 9th year and is as popular as ever.

Taking Time Out in Forrest

“Sometimes it’s important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it’s essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down the rainbow.”

~ Douglas Pagels

When life is so busy you seem to be chasing your tail, it’s always nice to be able to take time out, stop for a while, enjoy precious moments and recharge the batteries.

Over the past few months, I’ve been busy writing, writing, writing, but unfortunately not for Eco Traveller. Alongside this site I write for a few other clients, and one of them needed 60,000 words in a short time. That’s a lot of words!

Thankfully, it was all about travel, so without leaving Melbourne I’ve travelled around Australia, Malaysia, India, New York, England and Spain. Of course, it doesn’t help your wanderlust when you write about travel more than actually travelling, but it does help to add to the travel coffers for upcoming trips.

Taking time out recently meant a trip to Forrest, in south west Victoria. It’s a beautiful spot with some great running and bike trails, quaint cafes and its very own brewery.

My biggest decision of the day was which beer to try first.

ETG will be back next week with more from Victoria and beyond.

Have a great weekend!

An Underwhelming Experience at Underwater World, Mooloolaba

rays underwater world sea lifeImage: Cownose rays in the Ocean Walk Through Experience

During a trip to Mooloolaba late last year, on the one day of our trip that it rained, we decided to take the kiddies to Underwater World SEA LIFE thinking we could while away the hours looking at wet things instead of being wet.

Underwater World is touted as one of THE places to go on the Sunshine Coast, and has a fancy, shiny website to promote the attraction. Being a water baby at heart, but unable to scuba dive on the break I thought it would be good to show our girls why I like to go diving, hoping that one day they will be as hooked on the real underwater world as I am.

Boy was I disappointed. It should be call Underwhelming Underwater World.

Review and Giveaway: Looptail by Bruce Poon Tip

“The time was right to transform ourselves. We would use the power of our community, which we would build and strengthen using tools like social media, to rally our company and our customers around social innovation. Alleviating poverty, empowering local communities, and all the things we had already been passionate about would become a core part of our business. It was about creating a business model based around happiness and freedom, and truly believing that we could really change the world.”

From Looptail: How One Company Changed the World by Reinventing Business
by Bruce Poon Tip, Founder of G Adventures

looptail g adventuresWhen people announce they want to change the world, few people listen because few people really mean it. Bruce Poon Tip means it, and has devoted his entire adult life to making it happen.

Looptail reveals Poon Tip’s journey from humble beginnings to world-renowned business leader. Armed with just a few credit cards and a bucketful of ambition, the story tells how Poon Tip created what is now one of the largest adventure travel companies in the world, G Adventures. Offering authentic, sustainable tours for travellers, G Adventures runs around 15,000 small group tours across all seven continents, and is touted to be one of the happiest places to work in the world.

In this first-person account, Poon Tip divulges the highs and lows encountered during the shaping of the company, how he dealt with each obstacle, and suggests how other businesses can replicate his methods.

Some of his business concepts are less than traditional. G Adventures famously has no HR department; instead culture, karma and community play important roles. Techniques used in games and game design are used to drive certain desired behaviours among the staff in an effort to make the company a fun place to work, and Poon Tip promises to give any of his employees $5,000 if they manage to actually hurt his feelings when giving negative feedback about the company.

Poon Tip is aware some of his ideas are a little left field, and has become used to the eye-rolling when explaining his concepts. Yet, he is obviously doing something right as he is a frequent keynote speaker at both tourism and business conferences.

While Looptail is in essence a business book, it is a great read if you’re interested in travel and tourism. It explores the finer details of setting up a tour company, from meetings with potential hosts to how to drum up interest from investors, yet it is also enjoyable from a travellers’ point of view as it revisits Poon Tip’s own life-changing travel moments. Discover why his first trip to Tibet made such an impression, how he managed to get arrested on the Burmese border, and why sustainable travel is so important to him.

Poon Tip’s inspirational story confirms that if you put your mind to it, you really can change the world.

If you’d like to get your mitts on a copy of Looptail, Eco Traveller Guide has FIVE copies of the New York Times Bestseller to giveaway. The books are Australian editions, including exciting exclusive material. *Giveaway open to Australian readers, only.

Bruce Poon Tip and dalai lama

INTERVIEW: Founder of G Adventures Bruce Poon Tip Talks Books, Business and being the Dalai Lama’s BFF

Sitting in the darkened amphitheater with flashes of light from smartphones occasionally lighting the room, I listen intently to the speaker on stage, hanging on every word.

It is April 2012, and the Future of Tourism conference is in Melbourne for one night only. Run by G Adventures and Planeterra, the evening conference highlights the role of sustainability in travel. The main speaker of the night is founder of the companies and entrepreneur extraordinaire Bruce Poon Tip, and he has the entire audience in the palm of his hand.

As the crowd pours out of the conference at the end, the excitement among attendees is palpable, and anyone that doubted their sustainable traits are surely complete converts by now. It is almost cult-like, and I don’t mind at all; I am just delighted to be in the same room as others who share my passion for sustainable travel.

****

I never got to meet Bruce in person that night, but I did manage to catch him for a chat a few weeks ago when he was in Melbourne to promote his New York Times bestseller, Looptail: How One Company Changed the World by Reinventing Business. And yes, he is still inspiring to listen to.

New Groups of Komodo Dragons Discovered in Flores

Until recently, it was believed endangered Komodo dragons were only found in a few areas of Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.

Yet, a few weeks ago a team of conservationists confirmed the presence of two new communities living in the Mbeliling forest area, in the far west of Flores.
